Valuing Earth’s Most Precious Natural Resource on World Water Day 2021

Monday, March 22 is World Water Day. It was established in 1993 by the United Nations to boost global awareness and to focus attention on safe water. The theme of 2021 is “Valuing water.”

Most of us take water for granted. We turn the tap or the spigot and out it comes. Many of us think it is inexhaustible. Some of us don’t acknowledge the effects of climate change on our planet’s water supply. And others refuse to acknowledge their part in compromising our water supply with chemicals and contaminants.

At PMG, we value those who commit to conserving, protecting and supplying clean water to our world. That’s why we applaud when we hear of brownfields being cleaned up. That’s why we applaud the EPA when it enforces cleanup laws. That’s why we applaud organizations such as Long Island’s water districts as they fight to supply millions of people with water and to protect a magnificent subterranean aquifer every day. That’s why we applaud firms like D&B Engineers and Architects and their engineers like Ofonime Inokon-Anusionwu who brought potable water to a village in Nigeria through weCare Africa.

And how much fresh potable water is there on Earth, the Water Planet? Estimates are approximately 3% of the planet’s total water is fresh water, with most of that found in glaciers, ice caps and our own atmosphere. So maybe only half of one percent of all fresh water is actually available.  And that’s why water is Earth’s most precious natural resource and we need to value it.

To help bring awareness to this important day, tell us what you value about water and what it means to you. Share your thoughts and experiences to spark conversations with hashtags #WorldWaterDay and #Water2me.
